The 12th Annual ACFO/ACAF Classic
for the Rick McCallum Memorial Cup

2007 GOLF TOURNAMENT

True to tradition, the 12th Annual ACFO Golf Classic was a warm and sunny occasion. A big thank you to all who came out to support the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Ottawa Heart Institute Alumni on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at the Meadows Golf and Country Club in Ottawa. All participants took to the course with varying degrees of skill but equal levels of enthusiasm!

The tournament offered two $10,000 hole-in-one opportunities and a "Marshmallow Drive" (competition to hit the furthest marshmallow). Sadly, there were no winners of either hole-in-one, however, Kevin Vroom managed to hit his marshmallow the longest distance to win that contest!

Congratulations to the winning team which consisted of: Dean Bourgeon, Renato Sicoli, and Dave Tubbe.

This charity golf event was first held in 1996, in memory of Rick McCallum, Vice President of the Association, who died of a heart attack. Since then, ACFO has committed itself to raising close to $110,000 for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Ottawa Heart Institute Alumni, including another $10,000 raised at this year's tournament!

The evening festivities were emceed by the very talented and entertaining, Elliot Smith, Magician. In a short speech to the dinner audience that included Rick McCallum's wife Sheila and daughter Ashley, ACFO Chair Milt Isaacs acknowledged how wonderful it was for ACFO to give back to the community. He presented cheques to Barry Stanton, Director of Development at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and Dennis Doucette, former President of the Board of Directors at the Ottawa Heart Institute Alumni, who had volunteered as a hole monitor during the tournament.

Upon accepting his cheque, Mr. Stanton thanked everybody for their contributions over the years and said it was a terrific legacy for Rick McCallum to have left behind. The money, he explained, has been used to establish a genetics lab to research cures for heart disease. They recently made a landmark discovery about how common diseases develop - a significant finding given that genetic mutation is the reason behind one third of strokes in North America. Mr. Doucette also thanked the audience for their fundraising efforts.

Again, thank you to all - our sponsors, prize donors, players, and especially our volunteers - without you, we could never have enjoyed such a success!
