NOMINEE FOR CHAIR
Don Caldwell
My name is Don Caldwell, and I want to be your representative as the next President of ACFO. I'm an involved FI-02 that works in the NCR, who has previously served on the Association's Board of Directors. Like the majority of the ACFO membership I'm a working level FI (the 01 and 02 level), not a management level FI.
During my term in office I will commit to pursuing the following:
- Fight to reestablish the historical relativity in FI salaries compared to the other professional groups in the public service that has been slowly erased by the employer and work towards recreating other relativities that previously existed like the gap between CR salaries and the FI-01 salary;
- Continue the ongoing fight for the recognition of the FI group's professionalism and importance in the public service, especially during this volatile period in our country's leadership;
- Fight to ensure that FI jobs will not be lost due to the employer's common and shared services initiative;
- Fight for the proper classification of regional FI jobs so that they are classified the same as headquarters positions meaning equal pay for equal work nationwide;
- Fight to ensure that Financial Systems positions remain in Finance and are not taken over by CS positions in Informatics branches government wide;
- Encourage more involvement from our female members in ACFO since our group is over 52% female, and the issues our female members face should be heard loud and clear;
- Reduce wasteful spending by the Association such as saving tens of thousands of dollars by holding the majority of the monthly Board meetings by teleconference instead of flying in the Board members to Ottawa for a two hour meeting. But...
- Continue to invest in the Association's aggressive communication strategy which resulted in our nationally published Checks and Balances I and II position papers;
- Invest in modernizing the Association website and add incentives to increase member usage, making it a useful and used tool for all members.
The Association is more than a $25 dollar monthly payment for the members. It is here to support a community that joins us all from collective bargaining to having an interest in encouraging a spotlight on strong financial management in the federal public service.
When you vote, you should vote for me because:
- I have over five years of experience with the Association, from being a member of various committees to serving on the Board for two years before resigning one year ago due to frustration with the way the Board was operating;
- I am the only fluently bilingual candidate running, and although the role of President can be endlessly debated there is one thing we can all agree on - the President is the face of the Association and as a national Association we should have a bilingual President;
- I am, like the majority of you, a working level FI, and as such I am the ideal candidate to know the current issues facing the majority of the members in the FI group. We should have a President who can manage the union without being part of management;
- I am a young, vibrant candidate yet I have been in the group long enough to have more years in the FI group than more than half of the members.
This election is the most important one in the Association's recent history. This will be the first time in ACFO history that Merdon Hosking won't be our President. This is an important time for the members of the Association as you pick the second president. I encourage you to fill your ballot and cast a vote for the Association's future, - a vote for Don Caldwell.
