UPDATE ON PUBLIC SERVICE COLLECTIVE BARGAINING
May 30, 2005

The negotiating team met with the Employer on May 26 and 27.

To date, discussions have been progressing in a constructive manner. Dialogue has been open and honest, with a free flow of ideas and mutual respect.

Progress has been made on many non-monetary issues, with agreement on a number of clauses.

As well, there is tentative agreement on several issues that have some positive monetary impact.

There was some acknowledgement by the Employer on the importance of the work of FIs in the Government of Canada. It is however unclear at this point whether this will translate into concrete results at the bargaining table as it pertains to compensation.

The Portable Document Format Association's initial offer on wages and increments was not accepted, as was expected. The Employer has made an offer than was less than what other groups have received. The Association submitted a modified proposal and currently awaits response from the Employer. We have requested to receive this response at the next round of negotiations on June 10.

The negotiating team and the Compensation and Benefits Committee feel that if negotiations do not proceed in a progressive manner, it will become necessary to apply pressure on the Employer in order to achieve our goals.

Stay tuned for more information as events unfold.
