Pressuring the Employer II
February 24, 2006

The election of a new Government with an increased focus on accountability and financial controls means that the work of financial managers will be given higher profile than it has ever had in the past. The Conservatives come to power with a strong desire to ensure that taxpayer's dollars are well managed and monitored. FIs in the federal government will be asked to play an even greater role in ensuring that happens.

The new government will need active support from the FI community, and its full participation to ensure that this part of their mandate is achieved. As ACFO has publicly stated on a number of occasions including in our press release of November 16, 2005 entitled Portable Document Format file "Do the Math" and in the two "Checks and Balances" papers, we are prepared to work with the Office of the Comptroller General and the government to help make that happen.

At the same time, FIs need a sign from the government that it is willing to work with us. For the employer, the best place they can communicate that to us is at the bargaining table. Thus far, the signs have not been overwhelmingly positive. Over the next few weeks, ACFO will be delivering this message to the new government and we need you to help to support this initiative. There are several ways you can do this.

First by talking to other FIs within your department to spread this message widely throughout the federal government.

Secondly, by participating in the actions recommended by your Compensation and Benefits Committee outlined under the "Pressuring the Employer" section of the ACFO website.

Thirdly, and most importantly, by sending a letter to your new Member of Parliament pledging your support for greater financial controls and management, and by asking that FIs be treated fairly at the bargaining table. You can find examples of letters and information on where to find your MP's address here.

This is an opportunity for all of us to show leadership and determination. It's also a great opportunity to achieve fairness for all FIs.

Thank you for your support.
