Professional and Ethical Issues Committee
Volunteers needed for this new committee.
For the past couple of years, your Association has looked into various ways to enhance the image of FI's individually and collectively as professionals, providers of value-added products and worthy members of the management team. One of our initiatives to meet this goal has been to informally approach the professional accounting bodies - CICA, SMAC and CGAC, seeking ways to establish a forum for ongoing dialogue with respect to issues of mutual interest. We have already met with officials of SMAC and CGAC and are pursuing a similar meeting with the CICA.
As a result of these dialogues, the Association has decided to set up a standing committee, chaired by our Past Vice-president, Ross Christian, to seek a more formal relationship with the accounting bodies and eventually with some universities offering the MBA program. We expect to discuss the FI Group Definition, the FI Selection Standard and emerging accounting issues, particularly those with application to the government as well as other matters impacting ethics, "whistle-blowing", best practices, ongoing development, training and other similar matters. We might add that the two accounting bodies we have already met with have been very receptive to our initial contact.
We also see a need to meet departmental officials, including those charged with developing or managing ethic programs in the government, CCRA and Crown corporations. Some of the issues for discussion may well impact future contracts.
Accordingly, APSFA is looking for FI volunteers to staff the new committee and would welcome members holding CA, CGA or CMA designations to apply as soon as possible. There is probability of some travel and regular meetings in the evenings, weekends and occasionally during work hours.
Please forward your application to Ross Christian at the APFSA office before May 30, 2001 by e-mail, fax or mail. The Board of Directors will make the appointments to this committee at their meeting on May 31, 2001. The first meeting of the Committee will take place in June.
