FI NEWS : April 2001
APSFA Communications Strategy
The Executive and Board of Directors strongly feel that communications with the membership is one of the Association's most important functions. To date we have achieved this through the use of the hard copy newsletter, the Web site, local visits and most recently, through the use of e-mail.
With the rapid development of technology and the high cost of printing and postage, it makes sense as well as cents to move toward the dissemination of information electronically.
Over the next 9 months, we will be implementing the following:
- distributing the FI News electronically, either as an attachment to or a link in an e-mail;
- distributing information such as the FI3/FI4 initiative electronically;
- enabling members to update their tombstone data over the Web;
- conducting surveys such as issues for collective bargaining and using the Internet; and
- voting on collective agreements, AGM resolutions, etc. using the Internet.
Our rationale for doing so is:
- reducing the cost of mailings;
- reducing the cost of printing; and
- reducing the time it takes to get information to and from members.
In order to be able to accomplish the above, we must have up-to-date home e-mail addresses for most if not all of our members. Why home e-mail addresses? We do not have agreements with departments/NavCan to distribute material through their e-mail systems and of course there are things which we do not wish to send through their systems.
Currently we have less than 20% of the memberships' home e-mail addresses. To rectify this, we will be setting up a service for members whereby we will provide a free e-mail site for each and every member. This will allow each member to access his/her home e-mail from anywhere. The service will be available on June 1, 2001.
Details of the service will be forthcoming prior to the commencement date.
