As a constituent of your riding and a proud Canadian, I am writing you this letter to ask you for your support. I am a financial officer (FI) for the Department of [Fill in name of department].

The FI community has been without a contract now for over a year. Thus far, negotiations with the Treasury Board have not shown satisfactory results. We have been offered less than what other groups have gotten in their last negotiations, which is both unreasonable and illogical. The FI community deserves at least the same compensation as comparable groups including the Auditors, who have similar professional requirements. An independent survey conducted by the Hay Group indicated that the Financial Management Group (FI) as a whole currently trails the market by 12 to 13%. There is a significant increase in the demand for financial professionals due to more rigorous and complicated corporate governance requirements. Therefore, the public sector is becoming less competitive and will have challenges recruiting and retaining accountants.

Financial officers play a critical role in ensuring that public funds are managed correctly and within the parameters of the Financial Administration Act. By supporting our group and addressing our concerns for fair compensation, you are sending a clear message to the public that the government is serious about cleaning up financial management and improving accountability in the government.
